I'm looking for a source of marine-rated switches that are cosmetically
appealing. I'm making a new panel, so the size and shape of the mounting
hole isn't critical - in fact, the switch will determine it.
I'd probably like to have these switches lighted. I know this is asking a
lot, BUT...where the nav/anchor light switch is a DPDT with center-off, I'd
LOVE to have one that is a different color for nav (green) and anchor (red).
That would allow me to know that I have the right position , even when it's
too dark to see the switch.
Does anybody know of a decent source of such hardware?
Thanks a million!
Charlie
Waterproof, DC rated, lighted switches are rare. Ancor makes a line of
waterproof switches rated at 20A 12VDC; a couple have LEDs. It occurs
to me that if it's too dark to see the switch, you'll be able to see
the lights you've turned on. You should be checking those anyway when
you turn them on. Alternately, mount a separate light or lights for
each switch where you might need them.

Airplane designers once faced a similar issue.
After some crashes triggered by misidentified switches,
designers no longer have the option.
The gear lever is a stick with a round (wheel) on the end.
The lever goes DOWN to put the gear DOWN ( How bout that?)
The flap lever has a flap section on the end. Ditto. (FAR 23.781)
My sixteen year old looked at me sidewards when I bought a long
paddle switch for the bilge pump on his boat.
"Dad, none of the switches match!"
I explained that sometimes if you can feel which switch is which,
it can save your bacon.

It just occurred to me though can you not place small lights or LED's
in different colours just above or below each switch?
i.e. Port light switch down red light comes on.......
designed to any colour scheme you wish! these LED's are widely
available in any auto accessory shop here in The U.K you can even
get them flashing or strobing high or low output and they use very
little power!
Your Idea sounds excellent and is something I shall consider myself.
Cheers
Phil.
