Has anybody built the Gypsy that is in New Instant Boats by Payson? I'm
thinking of starting with that design and I would like to know what any
builders have experienced with that design.

Thanks,

I'm working on it and have been for awhile now. Mr. Payson has a book that
outlines the building procedure and I would recommend you buy that book,
"Building the New Instant Boats." The hull is knuckle bottomed and narrow and
with the right sailor it is suppose to be fast and responsive. The only
drawback is the hull is full of bulkheads due to the building method. The
building method is fast but consumes lots of epoxy and fiberglass cloth for a
small boat. Every angle where a bulkhead meets the interior hull is filled
with a fillet of epoxy and covered with fiberglass cloth covered with more
epoxy. I haven't heard any performance complaints.

Built one 5 years ago. Sail's Well! Dispite the designers assurance
that polyester resin was acceptable. I had a few joints 'pop' on day when the
dager board hit a rock. Use Expoxy, It's much simpler to build a new
board than trying to repair the hull!

I built one about 3 years ago and I agree with Brian. I should have used epoxy instead of poly
resin. I am refinishing it now (new hull paint and interior framing) Very easy to build with a
minimal of tools, and fun to sail or motor with it. A pic of it can be seen at my website:

By the way, I called about getting a sail for little boat, using the number in the book (I used the
scale drawing in the book to build mine and did not order the plans) BIG GRIN! Turns out that
the number there is "Dynamite's" home number! Spent a good 1/2 hour just chatting with him before
I got around to ordering the sail. Really nice and down to earth guy, someone you would love to
apprentice with. Unfortunately, he told me that he no longer builds boats. <Bummer> Good luck
with the Gypsy if that is what you decide to go with, and for god's sake, have fun with it!
