David Hazen's book The Stripper's Guide to Canoe Building includes plans
for an 18' stripper in both 34" and 36" beams, as well as a 20'
freighter with 48" beam. This is an older book and the techniques
described are dated. He builds the bottoms as separate pieces,
("footballs"). I have wondered whether plywood could be used instead of
strips for this section in the flat-bottomed canoes.

I wouldn't call his method dated. It is a very good way to
crank out strip canoes on a semi commercial scale or for people more
concerned with boats than art.

My 19" Grand Laker plans came from a book with a blue cover. I think that
it was
called "Building a Cedar Strip Canoe". We used the technique from an
excellent
book called "Canoecraft". If you are going to build a canoe, get this book.
I wouldn't use plywood, personally, but if you do, only use marine grade
plywood.
The Grand Laker is an excellent design and can handle very rough water.
I use it on large lakes in the Rockies with a 4HP Minn Kota motor, but the
plans
say that it can handle a 10HP!

Good luck!
