My wife and I are building Phil Bolger's AS39, originally designed for
Bob and Sheila Wise, and named "Loose Moose II." We plan to try living
aboard once it's completed. We are new to sailing and boat building, but
we have help and encouragement from my brother and his wife, who have
built a Bolger long Micro (and lived aboard!) and are currently building
a modified AS29.

I've searched the 'net for AS39 sites and/or newsgroups without success.

We'd love to hear from anyone who has built one of these, or from anyone
with news on the Wise's. Last I heard, they were going to try a junk rig
on LMII, and Bob was writing a book on boat building. That was from
1996--haven't heard anything more.

Mark,

I just saw Loose Moose II (I think!) for sale somewhere in Florida.
The listing was in the latest issue of "Messing About in Boats". Price
is 3/4's of his $100,000 cost.

Mark,

Fas as I know there are only two, MAYBE three AS39s... the Wise's, the one for
sail/sale in Florida ("Wizard") and maybe one more. There are definitely more
AS29s, apparently concentrated down in the Southeast. There's one AS19 in
Virginia (also for sale). There are Martha Janes galore.

If you want Bolger links, try the Cheap Pages:

and look at the page about Plywood Boats.

Mark,

I just love this desin! I have thought that this boat would make a great
live-aboard, but was concerned about the headroom. From the plans shown in
BOATS WITH AN OPEN MIND, I calculated the max headroom at abought 5'9", but
I'm not sure that I am 100% correct there, as these are drawings very
small. I would be really interested in hearing about your project as you
get into it. I would love to see the original Loose Moose II also, just to
get a fell of the actual built boat, so if you find out anything, please
let me know.

Good luck!!
