Paint Selection

I am well along in building a sandolo da s'ciopo, a traditional Venetian
boat. It is flat bottom and straight sides; it was used for hunting in
the lagoon of Venice.
My question is what sort of paint should I use? The boat will be used
in the fresh water of the Grand River in Michigan, and when not in use
will be stored in a boathouse. Do I need to use some specialized marine
paint or can I do well with a high quality exterior enamel? I should
use something resistant to scraps and scruff for the bottom, since I
will have to wheel it/drag it over a dock into the water, but the
topsides and insides will not have this problem.

Best concept for the bottom is to put a good layer of fiberglass on it prior
to painting. You can put a second layer along the keel line. If the boat
is going to be stored _in water_, then you must use a marine paint rated for
below the waterline use (most are not.) A good bottom paint is
'Copperpoxy'. For topsides paint, or all the paint if the boat is not
stored in water for weeks on end, is the System Three 2-part linear
polyurethane. It's water soluble and bullet proof. The toughest paint of
all is Awlgrip, but it stinks like hell and takes more skill to apply, not
to mention the special solvents and twice the cost.

Interlux one part polyurethane is a pretty tough paint available at most
marine store$. I have also had pretty good luck with acrylic exterior
house paint, but it is less resistant to scraping. Another good paint is
Rustoleum exterior enamel. You will not need a bottom paint if the boat is
not stored in the water. I'm still looking for the perfect paint myself.

Are you going to scull this boat like a gondola? Sounds like a fun project!

Thanks for the response. I will look into Interlux. Yes, I am going to row it
like a gondola. I have spent a lot of time in Venice and connected with a club
there and they taught me to row alla Venezia.

Yes: oh yes! 3 parts rustoleum, one part cayenne, one part ground
chile peppers.
