Anyone out there built a Van de Stadt 34 in steel ?
I have purchased plans & am about to start assembling
the building cradle.
Any suggestions or offers of advice please (particularly with
regards to welding).
Thanks
Paul Thurston.

Ive got a steel VdS 34.
last year I pulled the rudder off for the first time to inspect it. I was
surprised to find that the rudder and stock is alloy. The alloy stock
disturbs me a bit since I wouldn't have thought alloy would make a good
choice of material due to low fatigue resistance.
Would you mind having a look at your plans and letting me know if this is
standard for the 34?
thanks

I can't help you about that particular boat. I've got some questions
about welding though.
Are you going to use a stick welder or a wire (MIG) welder. I'm planning
to build a steel boat by Bolger. I think I'm going to use MIG to keep
the quality of the weld up and the heat distortion down.
I notice some ads in the back of Boatbuilder that a yard in Florida is
selling 34' hulls for $17k, as I perhaps imperfectly recall. He offered
at least two designs, one is Bolger's Ditchwitch which is powered. The
other was a sailboat, again, as I recall.
This seemed like pretty damn good prices.
I just finished reading Buehler's Troller Yacht Book. Lots of
interesting steel boats in there, including one 44' econo-dory that
Buehler claims can be built and equipped for less than $20k 1998
dollars.

I think the message got away without the link, I sure would be
interested in seeing the site though.
