Hi all,

Anyone out there built a Van de Stadt 34 in steel ?

I have purchased plans & am about to start assembling
the building cradle.

Any suggestions or offers of advice please (particularly with
regards to welding).

Thanks

Paul Thurston.

Paul,
This design is very popular in Europe and it has been built in steel, but
not by me. Keep the scantlings light, otherwise it is a stone. Overbuilding
is easy, underbuilding is smart in small steel boat construction. Plate
thickness 3-4 mm. 3 is better than 4.

Hi paul,

Ive got a steel VdS 34.
last year I pulled the rudder off for the first time to inspect it. I was
surprised to find that the rudder and stock is alloy. The alloy stock
disturbs me a bit since I wouldn't have thought alloy would make a good
choice of material due to low fatigue resistance.

Would you mind having a look at your plans and letting me know if this is
standard for the 34?

thanks
adrian

I can't help you about that particular boat. I've got some questions
about welding though.

Are you going to use a stick welder or a wire (MIG) welder. I'm planning
to build a steel boat by Bolger. I think I'm going to use MIG to keep
the quality of the weld up and the heat distortion down.

I notice some ads in the back of Boatbuilder that a yard in Florida is
selling 34' hulls for $17k, as I perhaps imperfectly recall. He offered
at least two designs, one is Bolger's Ditchwitch which is powered. The
other was a sailboat, again, as I recall.

This seemed like pretty damn good prices.

I just finished reading Buehler's Troller Yacht Book. Lots of
interesting steel boats in there, including one 44' econo-dory that
Buehler claims can be built and equipped for less than $20k 1998
dollars.

Here's a site where this boat was built in aluminum, not steel, but it's
a very good and informative site. Shows all the steps including building
the cradle. He has lots of advice on welding, material selection, etc.

I think the message got away without the link, I sure would be
interested in seeing the site though.

Don't know the link that was originally talked about, but there is a
good one on http://www.frontiernet.net/~adriaan, or check van de stadt
itself at http://www.stadtdesign.com

The site is probably Adriaan's - the link can be found through

We do some of the Van de Stadt designs in Steel, as well as many other
designs in both Aluminium and steel, supplied as precut parts that interlink
to form the skeleton of the boat, and then skinned. Have a look at our
website at: www.steelkit.demon.co.uk , we can supply the kits as flat packed
to anywhere in the world.
Hope this is of use,

Try the metal boats forum at boatbuilding.com This is an excellent
source for all boat building questions and one of the best boat building
site on the net.
