Eastern Bluebirds

I'll admit I don't know much about these birds other than how to spot them
if I see one. From everything I've read, South Carolina is well within
their territory. They don't really have to migrate. I never saw one (much
less a flock!) until last fall. Today I spotted a bluebird at my suet
feeder. It appeared to be a female with a grey head and slightly lighter
orange/red breast than a male. Still the obvious blue wings, though! What
shades of nature :) Later I saw her clinging to the side of a pine tree. I
wonder if there are others around or if she's a loner? I'll keep the suet
feeder filled and my eyes peeled.

Can you put up a bluebird house? We have enjoyed these beauties
living in our yard. And they do come to the suet feeders. We see all
kind of birds at the suet, especially when they have babies to feed.

What I've read is that a bluebird box needs to be placed at the edge of a
large, open field or yard. Otherwise, attracting them and encouraging them
to nest may be iffy. My box IS at the edge of a huge farm field. A day after
erecting the box onto a 5' post two early-Marches ago, a bluebird pair
checked it out and eventually nested in it.

Unless it is a puttputt course, around here that would be a perfect
match for "....needs to be placed at the edge of a large, open field or
yard." What am I missing?

That could be perfect! Can you put up a box, in your yard, that faces the
golf course? Or is there too much growth between your yard and the course? I
remember the first western bluebirds I saw in Tucson was a flock of them...
in a tree on a golf course. (I don't golf; I was birding. If I were to have
gotten hit in the head with a golf ball I might have then heard a lot of
tweeting sounds....)

There is no growth. There's my patio, about 8 feet of lawn... after that
we're off my property and onto HOA property. The tree I saw the bluebird
clinging to after it ate some suet isn't on my property. I'd have to get
permission to put up a birdhouse. Trust me, it's not worth the hassel
dealing with those people. I'll stick with having bluebirds show up at the
suet feeder :)

I know that pain. One of the few benefits of moving this past summer.

Can you put the box on your property and hang a suet feeder from it?

There's no good place to put one. The back yard is very small. The front
yard is larger but because of the layout of the house I wouldn't be able to
see it. I'll just content myself to seeing them as they drop by for a bite
or a bath :)

A bluebird house doesn't have to be in a tree. In fact, here in Illinois
the Department of Conservation recommends attaching the box to a fencepost.
Would your HOA have a fit if you just drove a t-post into the ground towards
the back edge of your property and hung the box on it? IIRC, bluebird
houses are supposed to be fairly low to the ground.

Bluebird houses need to be spaced at least 100yards apart. These birds
are very territorial
