A question from a small child relayed to me ("Macie trivia question of
the day... What holds bird nests together?") led me to this site (since
all I could say with any authority was swallow--mud,
hummingbirds--spider webs) http://www.earthlife.net/birds/nests.html

I've not read it all the way through yet, and I know nothing of the
author--but it looks right to me.

And I've not met Macie (that I remember), but I've seen bits and pieces
of her questions and all I can say is I desperately hope that nobody
steps on her inquiring mind.

And don't forget the nests that are made of bird saliva--the one's
used for 'bird's nest soup.' (The birds are cave swiftlets.)

That is mentioned at the bottom of that article.

There are a number of things on the authentic Chinese menu that I don't
care to try, or if I do, not have discussed in detail. (I haave a funny
story about that.)
