Someone that breeds exotic birds told me if I would put several drops of
Clorox Bleach per gallon of water, it would keep the birds drinking water
from getting unhealthy. Will this work on finches? I breed finches and I am
somewhat new at this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is simple chlorination of a water source just like the municipal systems
do. A low level will kill bacteria and still not be noticable or hazardous to
the birds. Clorox is a 5.75% stabilized solution of NaOCl, so you can
calculate what is required for low level protection.

If you are using tap water, it already has chlorine, or even worse, it might
have chloramine in it to control the
bacteria. Chloramine is an ammonia compound. If the
birds can defecate into their water dish, chloramine will form a poisonous
nitrite compound. Small animals, fish, and birds can't cope with very small
concentrations of nitrite. So if chlorinating water is your
way of avoiding changing the birds' water and cleaning their water dish on a
daily basis, maybe you shouldn't
keep caged birds.

Now this is what I like about rec.birds. We get all kinds of great
advice, for free! I love this group!

Thanks for the info, kaybearjr!

Well Kaybearjr, thanx for the info but you see I Don't have city or county
water, I have a well. And I have been a Professional Game Bird Breeder for
over 20 years. And I do in fact clean out all water containers daily. But I
was trying to find out what other breeders think or use for this purpose.

Also my birds are Healthy and I DO CARE dearly for them.

You will want to get a concentration of 0.5 to 1 part per million.

I'm not sure about birds, but fish are very sensitive to chlorinated compounds.
You might be able to buy a test kit to work out the exact number of drops to
add to get the correct concentration.

Pool supply stores have a simple colorimetric test kit for determining ppm of
chlorine.

Those do not go nearly low enough for the correct range for drinking water.

I can't believe anyone would add bleach to the water they're providing to
birds.

Either take the time to maintain your birding items or get out of the hobby.

Same here. I have several books on supplying water to the birds, maintaining
their bird baths etc. And everyone states to use bleach only for cleaning the
bath. I believe its like 9 to 10 parts water to 1 part bleach. And then to
rinse very very well, as the birds can become sick if there is bleach in the
water. I agree I also read that fish is the most acceptable to getting sick
from bleach, but birds do also. Just what I have read. I do not even use bleach
to clean my baths. I do once a year, but on a weekly basis I just use a brush
and good elbow work. Once a year I take them and give them a bleach bath,
rinsing very well and leave them to dry thoroughly before placing clean water
in them.

Hey, the pool supply kits can accurately measure .5 ppm, 1.0 ppm. Please check
facts before opening mouth.

Oh and I suppose you're going to tell me that municipal water treatment
facilities test with "toy" test kits obtained from pool supply companies. I
also suppose they go down to the local grocery store to by the bleach too!

The whole idea is ridiculous.

Give it up. Adding chlorine bleach to water provided to wildlife is just
not a sensible thing to do.

Maybe we should have the ASPCA give you a visit?
