Deer on the deck!

level walkway in front of the porch. I always put some corn
and "cheep" seed on the deck for the critters and LBBs.
We have deer in our area, and last night we heard one of those
"What the hell made that sound" moments. Yup, it was a deer on
the deck eating the corn. Today I put some corn for the deer
on the ground near the walkway, and thought, what would you do
if a deer slipped on the deck, broke a leg or something,
and was thrashing about - call the police, dial 911?
I dunno, and I don't want to think about it.

We have a large animal vet a few miles north that does (did?) rescues.
The last time we had an actual problem a long time ago it involved a
raccoon that had been beaten up pretty badly, called the Humane Society
(Which I now know is closely affiliated with (an agency of) the city of
Omaha)--they said we don't go that far out, call the Sheriff. Called
the sheriff, he called the HS and told them to get it handled.
That's when I found out about Chance Ridge up the road.

My daughter Linda came across a deer that had been hit and was badly
mangled but alive and suffering. she went to the nearest farm house
and got a farmer with a gun who took care of the problem. Sad but
necessary. In another case, a friend hit a deer and made the decision
that it could not recover so she called the sheriff and he came out
and took care of it. Both of these women would have taken the deer
home and nursed it back to health if possible but I think they made
the right decisions under the circumstances.

Get a good lawyer, as you might expect a negligence lawsuit filed by the
deer.

I waited until last week to bag Bambi and his sister. I'll pick up
the first venison tomorrow.
I also saw plenty of birds, including Ravens, a big Red-Tail Hawk,
Tundra Swans, Y-B Sapsuckers, Red-bellied woodpeckers,and Chickadees
and Juncos galore. I also heard the squealy call of Pine Siskins, but
didn't see any.
One area I hunted was aswarm with sparrows, but I couldn't ID them.
Goldfinches in winter uniform and Titmice are busy out back today.
