House Finch or Red poll?

We have a few small birds that come to our feeders and feast daily that
I have identified as Red Polls, but my wife insists that they are only
house finches (and we do have a bunch of them also). I don't think they
have enough red on their breasts and neck for finches - just a bright
red on the top of their head. Checking what references I have, it
doesn't appear that RedPolls come this far south (Dallas, Texas). Any
comments or other identifying characteristics?

The key to Redpolls is the small red spot on the head house finch have
a very redhead and a brown cap. The Redpoll's are streaked on the
sides of the breast and the center is rather white, there is some
streaking on the undertail coverts too. House Finch on the other hand
the females have heavy streaking on the breast and the males are red.
I hope that helps--it would help too to know where you are.
Good birding,

Rick

(I don't know any more about it than what you see there.)

This is an unusual winter for Redpolls.

Both birds have the red cap (poll) but only the male has the rosy red chest
... both have heavy striping.

After finding a White winged dove in my backyard in late November 2007, I
have no doubt that a Redpoll could easily show up in Texas!

I would be very unusual to have a Redpoll in Dallas. One simple way
to clinch the ID is to look at the face of the bird, particularly the
area
around the bill. On a Redpoll, that area is jet black and clearly
contrasts with the rest of the face. On a House Finch, male, that
area is red and on a female it's brown, but on neither does it
strongly contrast with the rest of the face.

Has that web page changed before I finally got to this thread? Nothing
I see there looks like any kind of bird.

Page changed--the pointer should have been to a particular picture.

I no longer remember if this was one of my errors that I was able to
correct or not.
