The key to Redpolls is the small red spot on the head house finch have
a very redhead and a brown cap. The Redpoll's are streaked on the
sides of the breast and the center is rather white, there is some
streaking on the undertail coverts too. House Finch on the other hand
the females have heavy streaking on the breast and the males are red.
I hope that helps--it would help too to know where you are.
Good birding,
Rick
Is this a Redpoll? http://pixdaus.com/index.php?pageno=4
(I don't know any more about it than what you see there.)

This is an unusual winter for Redpolls.

Both birds have the red cap (poll) but only the male has the rosy red chest
... both have heavy striping.
After finding a White winged dove in my backyard in late November 2007, I
have no doubt that a Redpoll could easily show up in Texas!

I only nsaw one bird in the link and it was not a Repoll. :)
I would be very unusual to have a Redpoll in Dallas. One simple way
to clinch the ID is to look at the face of the bird, particularly the
area
around the bill. On a Redpoll, that area is jet black and clearly
contrasts with the rest of the face. On a House Finch, male, that
area is red and on a female it's brown, but on neither does it
strongly contrast with the rest of the face.

I now know something else--I screwed that link up pretty bad.
How about this fellow?

Yes, Lawrence. Redpoll, Common. Indubitably.

A very nice picture of one too!

Yup, male redpoll.

Thanks
Thanks all!.. No question about it now -- they are Red Polls, in Dallas Tx.

Page changed--the pointer should have been to a particular picture.
I no longer remember if this was one of my errors that I was able to
correct or not.
