They'll blast the tree rats out of the feeder from quite a distance.
I used one to cut a channel for a drain pipe beneath a sidewalk. It
made quick work of hard clay; that's the kind of punch they have.

I know I can't shoot the redwings, but if and when the weather warms up I
will feeding all the birds for awhile. Then maybe the redwings will hassle
someone else.

You may want to check the law in your state regarding whether they can be
shot. For example, it is legal to shoot Redwinged Blackbirds, Crows, Brown
Headed Cowbirds, Grackles, Starlings and House Sparrows in Louisiana.
FWIW, if you have a large number of blackbirds clearing out your feeders,
unless you plan on guarding your feeders during all daylight hours, shooting
blackbirds probably won't be very effective; you'll likely go broke paying
for ammunition and carcass disposal before you will see any benefit. On the
other hand, if you have a small local population of a certain pest bird
(like house sparrows in a rural setting or a few pesky starlings that can
fit through the SREH's on your Martin houses), shooting them can work.

Pixi lives in West Virginia, IIRC.
The only birds that can be shot as pests in WV are English sparrows,
starlings, pigeons and "nuisance" crows.
There is a regular season for other crows.

Hi Donna,
I use two Golden Labs. Gives those squirrels a real work out for their
food.

When the weather warms up a bit I'll stop feeding the birds for a few
days. Hopefully the redwings and grackles will find a new spot to harass.
My neighbor just the road about 1/4 mile has none.
If I quit feeding maybe they'll goto his house.
Incidntally. It seems as though spring may finally be here. Supposed to go
to 67 today, with sunshine and into the 70s for at least a week.

It' a nozzle. You can get them at any home improvement store like
Lowe's or Home Depot. Wal-mart carries them, too. The nozzle
attaches to any standard garden hose and produces a tight, high-
velocity jet. The nozzle looks like a miniature version of the old
pointy fire hose nozzles.

On the LA page-
http://www.wlf.state.la.us/publicservices/landownerassistance/nuisanceanimals/
"Most wild birds fall under the regulations of the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (U.S.F.W.S.) and are Federally protected. These
birds cannot be shot, trapped or otherwise killed without first
obtaining a permit from the U.S.F.W.S. The only birds that do not
fall into this category are: pigeons, European starlings, house or
English sparrows. Domesticated waterfowl, ?city park? type ducks and
geese are unprotected also, although domesticated mallards that
resemble wild mallards in size and color and Canadian geese fall under
the jurisdiction of the U.S.F.W.S."
I thought Crows were federally protected under the Migratory Bird Act
of 1960 or 70 something.
But here-
http://www.wlf.state.la.us/hunting/wmas/seasons/
WMA= Wildlife Management unit-- Not sure what that is in Louisiana-
"Outlaw Quadrupeds and Birds (Coyotes, Armadillos, Crows, Blackbirds,
Starlings, and Beavers)
During hunting seasons specified on WMAs, incidental take of outlaw
quadrupeds and birds is allowed by properly licensed hunters and only
with guns or bows and arrows legal for season in progress on WMA.
However, crows, blackbirds, grackles and cowbirds may not be taken
before Sept. 1 or after Jan. 1."

Pixi doesn't live in Louisiana. She lives in WV, so do I. WV DNR
permits the shooting of "nuisance" crows --crows damaging crops--year-
round.
There is also a separate sporting season for crows.
R-W BB's are not considered pests in WV and cannot be killed for any
reason.
