I had a very strange experience last night or rather early this
morning. About 4 o'clock I was awakened by a bird singing. It
sounded like a vireo and it sounded like it was in my kitchen! I
tried to go back to sleep but it keep waking me up so about 5 I got up
and went outside. there seemed to be 3-maybe 4- vireos singing as
well as some chittering high in the trees! I had my big flashlight
but since the birds were in neighbors yards I wasn't able to get too
close. I didn't want to scare my neighbors or start dogs barking.
This morning all is quiet. I am thinking that it was a flock of
migrating birds that had stopped by. I don't know what else it might
have been. Mockingbirds sing at night in the spring but these were
not Mockingbirds. any ideas? Yesterday I had an American Redstart on
my birdbath so they are on the move.

I think that's exactly it. Most neo-tropical migrants migrate at night.
I'd guess you had a group that pulled up a little early in your yard.
