I have a sparrow that seems to be sick. He just sits at the
feeder and pecks at food that is dropped in the tray. He seems
to be shaking his head a lot and I am able to walk almost up to
him. When he does fly it is not very far. He mostly hops along
on the ground. I really am not that fond of sparrows but I had
one like that last summer and then one during the winter. Is
this just an old bird that is ready to die or do sparrows get
diseases? Another question is that we have been told to watch
for West Nile disease this year. I know that crows can have it
but do grackles and other birds get it? I live in Minnesota.
Thanks for any help.

Sparrows get diseases like any other creature. It could be sick or it
could just be old.

Other birds get it. Crows are the ones that are commonly found dead
because they are big and noticable enough to be found when they die and
they are apparently very susceptible to it. SOme other birds have a higher
survival rate and may end up carrying the disease rather than dying from
it.

this is a fed govt site with tons of West Nile info:

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/oa/wnv/

this is a map with different mortality rates for states- birds, horses(!),
people...
