Good Day Birders:

I will be attending a week-long course at Salem State College in Salem,
Massachusetts, in June (10-14). I am looking for birding locations in the
vicinity. I will be ordering "A Guide to Birding in Eastern Massachusetts"
from ABA. Class starts at 0830 and ends at 1630, so I will be able to bird
in the early morning hours and then after class gets out.

Thank you for your time.

Wolfgang,

There is an area on Cape Ann (Massachusetts north shore cape) called
"Plum Island". It is a reservation area that is very popular with
Massachusetts birders. I believe it is very near Ipswich or Gloucester,
MA. It should be very easy to find on a map as it is a penninsula or
man made Island on the ocean. I haven't been since my classes in
college, but I hear that it is still very productive.

It is unique in that you have the opportunity to see shore birds and the
like in the tidal flats and woodland birds in the decidious, forested
center of the reservation. They (in the 80s) had wooden walkways and
trails to get around. BRING REPELLANT, and dress appropriately as this
area is heavily populated with deer and therefore the deer tick that
carries lyme disease.

It is probably a 10 minute drive from the College. They may even have
some information about Plum Island for you if you ask.

Good luck and enjoy!

Plum Island is not on Cape Ann. It is neither a peninsula nor man-made.
It's about 40 minutes by car from Salem (except in rush hour, when it
take a lot longer.)
It's described in great detail in the birding guide which Wolfgang said
he had on order, so I refrained from answering. Please do not supply
misinformation. The book he has on order should be adequate.

It's 10 miles north of Ipswich, in the town of Newbury. It's not
actually on Cape Ann which is 20-30 miles south of Newbury.

Yep, keep those jean cuffs tucked in!

Not really. It's more like 30-40 minutes and that's without a lot of
traffic.

My server lost the original posting, but this is in response to Wolfgang
from Iowa State U, who was going to be in Salem, Mass, June 10 to 14 :

The Brookline Bird Club has an evening field trip in Ipswich on Monday 10.
Meet outside of the gate at Crane Beach parking lot at the end of Argilla
Road at 6:15. Piping Plovers, Least Terns, and sunset singers. Bring insect
repellent. Nonmembers are always welcome. Argilla Road runs E off Rte 1A
just S of downtown Ipswich. Salem State College is also on Rte 1A. Count
on 45 minutes in rush-hour traffic.

Otherwise, the Birder's Guide to Eastern Mass should provide enough ideas.
The Marblehead sanctuary is five minutes away and the ocean even less.
