Hi All!

My roommate just got a bird feeder and we were both wondering what type of
birdseed would be good to start with. We live in Davis, CA (in the
central valley), and were wondering what type of feed would be good to
attract a wide range of birds. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! :)

Sam, Black Oil Sunflower seeds are good all around munchies. I mix the black
oil seed with sunflower kernels. The kernels are expensive. But with just the
whole sunflower seed you will get a plethora of different kinds of birds once
they find it and the word gets around, and you can find the seed relatively
inexpensive at Walmart and places such as that. If you have a wild bird store
nearby like Wild Birds Unlimited or Birdwatchers Supply Company, you can spend
as much money as you want to on this great pastime. I also feed shelled
peanuts and suet cakes. It can get expensive.

Along with what Mickey wrote, if you want to attract a variety of birds, think
about putting general bird seed mix out on the ground. During the winter, a variety
of sparrows and other ground feeders come down from the Sierras and other
mountain/forest areas. In San Francisco, I don't do any ground feeding during the
summer, but starting in October, I will. Just a small handful thrown on the ground.

Sam,

Check out this site...It has a chart that shows the different types of
seed virsus the birds that eat them. Our Conservation Department
posted this...so farr its the best guide I've seen. If your interested
in general bird feed then a sac of "Wild Bird Feed" should do the trick.

Good Luck,

Don't be impatient Sam. When you put a feeder out for the first time,
it may take a few days for the word to get around. Good luck, and if
you get hooked, don't spend too much money.
