I was visited by a male hairy woodpecker this morning. I'd scattered some
mixed seed with dried cherries on the patio late yesterday. I also have
suet hanging in a feeder from the shepherd's hook. The smaller downy's have
been eating from the suet feeder. (Ditto the bluebirds, along with yellow
finches and Carolina wrens). But this bigger woodpecker was on the patio,
on the ground, pecking at the seeds. I've never seen a hairy woodpecker
feed on the ground before. Hmmmm.

At our old house we had a large platform on a corner of the deck railing
that attracted a lot of ground feeders (robins being the notable
exceptions).

Common visitors were Downys, Red Bellys, and Flickers. (Now that I
think about it, I don't remember Hairys although we had them on the
hanging feeders, including the BOSS, and the Nyjer (that they tried to
bash bigger holes in). I am not sure if I would have thought it odd or not.

In article <9pcuqq...@mid.individual.net>,
Birds of the Puget Sound Region says "may also feed on fruits, seeds,
sap." So, when hungry, they are apparently not too picky.
