Fellow brought me a Schwinn Super Sport hybrid seems about 2009. He had the derailleur get caught in the spokes. Bent the derailleur and the hanger pretty good. Tried to get hanger back but frankly for $10 a new one was a much better option even if I reasonably got the old one ok. Sure enough the new one sits squarely on and hopefully the new derailleur will equally be nice. Not expensive and once you bend one of the cheaper ones like this better to get a new one.

I have never had to replace a derailleur hanger on any repairs yet but frankly these gizmos really are all about the same. Some certainly different but seems even one a bit off can work in many cases. New parts definitely are a easier to use I can see why the LBS simply buy rather than fix. In this case the derailleur was shot.

Derailleur hangers varied widley:

I snapped one off my CX bike, it's an older Fort. Fort didn't respond to my request for a replacement, and the LBSs weren't much help either. I ended up getting one that was close and trimming with my dremel to make it fit.

One of my pet peeves. I wrote over twenty years ago that
there ought to be A road tab and A tab for MTB. That was
when the crazy selection was 100 or so not-quite-fit models.
We're at a few hundred now and I have not changed my mind.

They are certainly not all the same. When buying a new bike or frame order a spare derailleur hanger at the same time. When the bike is a couple of years old it will be harder to get one. On my crossbike I even have a spare derailleurhanger in my saddle bag.

That's a good idea but if you're like me you would forget where you put it the minute you need it.

"Standards? Who needs standards?"

(I agree with you.)

Isn’t that’s the idea (partly) behind SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger?
And the direct mount to the frame ie no hanger as such.

And yes way too many standards though I’ve only broken one, but was right
faff.

Standards are wonderful; we ought to have many of them!
