My neighbor's 16-year old son has a mtb with 26x1.75 rims and wants to
mount narrower, higher pressure tires on them. (I'll convert him to a
roadie yet.) Has anyone tried mounting a 26x1.5" 85-90 psi tire on a
wide rim like this? Is it worth trying?

Thanks.

It shouldn't be a problem. Usually the size designated on the rim is
somewhat nominal, with a lot of pretty narrow rims listed as "1.75." If
it's a very old bike, and the rim has no "hook" on the inside to grab the
tire bead, then you'd have trouble. But, in most cases, you should be fine.
If you have any questions about its relative width and tire applicability,
bring it into your LBS.

Scroll almost to the bottom of this link to see a table relating rim size to
acceptable tire sizes. Although I don't know if these numbers are
riliable...
