I'm in the market for a road bike, and a shop recommended a custom frame
from Rob Stowe from Rochester, NY. Has anyone heard of Stowe Bikes, and
can you tell me more about the outfit? The bike shop owner seems to
know all the tech talk, and the appeal of a custom frame is strong;
however, Stowe advertises via word-of-mouth and doesn't have so much as
a brochure. I'm leary about Stowe until I find out more about them.

Thank you,
Stan Kroder

As you are in New York have you tried Peter Eagleton in Dobbs Ferry ? I don't
have one of his frames but he has a good reputation locally.

Marco.

Also, look into Mezzatesta in Poughkeepsie, NY (914 462 3004)
profiled in Bicyclist February, 1998.
On the Web at: http://www.primenet.com/~lvergne/mezzates.htm)

Richard Sachs in Chester, CT (860 526 2059)

and of course, Serotta in Glens Falls, NY.

Good hunting.

I know 3 guys who ride Stowe road bikes. They are well-built and light. The
paint work is nothing special, though.
If you are investing in a truly custom frame, you'll want to deal directly with
the builder. I've heard veru good thing about Tom Kellogg/Spectrum. He's in
Eastern Pennsylvania--probably within driving distance for you. One of my
regular riding buddies has a $5,300 custom titanium Spectrum, road bike, and
he's happy (although for that much $ he's not about to admit to being
dissatisfied!) Tom spent a lot of time fitting him and consulting about
components, wheels, etc.

I own a Stowe and it is my favorite racing bike of the three racing bikes
I've owned. It is very nice and has a attractive and durable Imron finish.
It is rather old fashioned in the sense that it utilizes SL and SP tubing.
Ask Rob what choices of frame material he is currently using.
