My daughter has a "comfort" bike equipped with this fork. I want to
tear the bike apart in order to paint the frame. Are there any online
guides or just general instructions out there as to how to disassemble
the fork so that I can clean and paint the lower section without messing
up the upper section? Thanks.

PS: Advice on how to put it back together again afterwards would also be
appreciated :-)

Any reason You can't just mask the areas where you don't want paint?

Cheers

It's just a bigger pain in the butt and might interfere with my plans to
wash down the entire frame with detergent and hot water before painting.

try CLEAR GREEN at Graingers. Or Dawn

detergents require extreme rinsing with hot water(s)

In article <bf0acee6-4599-4234...@googlegroups.com>,
OK, trying to pull this back to the original question. I don't need a
detergent/soap/cleanser recommendation. My plan is to take this thing
apart (partially because there are parts of the fork that you can't get
paint to while the upper and lower sections are commingled). Does
anybody know how to do this? This is tech, right?

? good question.

if you can't see it, why [aint it ? izzit rusting ?

most of the 2-3 people using RBT, unpainted, ae road bike people so you need to wait for the mechanics to drag in.

off hand, I would believe there are but 4/5 ways to assemble a fork so oif you search for: how to or repair or disassemble or fork design or ? youi'll see something related to the garbage you're abt to destropy.

also see Goo IMAGES

the mtb people should know as if you loisetn closley you'll hear a chorus screaming abt sus forks.

try: http://forums.mtbr.com/shocks-suspension/

for exampull

the degreaser is in way of converstaion, I'm dealing with a diesel spill.
emulsifying agents traveled along way including various surfactants wetters dewetters drying agents and the stuff is cheap, rsukts better so you should go there after the PITA of taking that crap apart. see SUMMIT RACING for cleaners but simple green gets recommendations.

I don't know that fork but most modern boingers have bolts
at the very bottom of the fork behind the front axle. Look
there first.

Thanks Andrew. So undo those bolts and just pull it apart? I worry about a
clockmaker's nightmare of small loose parts falling out as I do this.

When it's in midair, unloaded, there's no tension on the
springs/bumpers/whatever. Pull away!

Well, I got it apart. Undo the top caps on the fork legs. Pull the spring
out of the left hand side. Undo the locking nuts at the bottom of the fork,
then, using a very long Allen key, undo the bolts inside the fork that
extend through the bottom. Slide the fork apart, pop the seals off the top
and you're done. No dampers inside, no oil, no fiddly bits and no thanks to
the manufacturer's rep, who sent me the useless user's manual instead of an
actual service manual.

Use non-petroleum grease to reassemble.

Is silicone OK? I've got some grease for automotive disc brakes lying
around.

??? GOOD QUESTION ! smear this grease on a flat clean shiny metal surface ...is the grease smearable, is a fil formed or not?

I have a Ford silicone bearing grease speced for disc brakes. Duznot smear due to hi temp apllication where bike grease is a low temp apllication. O doah use it for bikes then assuming if I doahn see a film itsnot gonna grease the bike parts.

mystery.
