I have Shimano Deore LX shifters (Rapidfire with indicators) on my Trek
mountain bike. I haven't ridden the bike much the past couple of years but
did so last week. The shifters for the front triple and rear 7-speed are
both messed up and exhibit the same problem.

With the front shifter, I can shift to low and the middle chainring, but
the shifter will not allow shifting to high (large chainring). It's like
something isn't grabbing internal to the shifter and just won't advance to
high. I even disconnected the cable to the front derailleur and just
applied tension of the cable with my hand as I attempted to shift, it just
won't shift into high. I took the shifter apart, didn't see anything
broken. Put it all back together and then it seemed to work. Slid it back
onto the handlebar, tightened it all up, and now it's back to not working!
I can sort of make it work if I fiddle with the lower lever that makes it
pop down but can't figure out exactly how to make it always work.

The rear shifter is behaving in much the same way. I can shift to small
cogs in the freehub but can't pull the derailleur up past the 4th cog,
something just isn't grabbing inside the shifter. I'm thinking a spring
has weakened inside the shifter from the thing sitting for a long time not
used? Or is it a lubricant thing, something has dried out or become
sticky? Has anybody else had this kind of problem with their shifters?

My sister-in-law has the same problem with her Alivio 7-Speed shifters
from the late '90s.She only rides the thing to the park with the kids
in the trailer and doesn't miss the big ring, so, no, I don't have a
fix.

But no, the problem is not unheard of.

Hello:
the problem with the shifters is a common one that happens all of the
time.
i am a bicycle mechanic myself and what you need to do is to spray a
light lubricant into both shifters and flush them out use a lot of it
if you have to while trying to shift then they may start to work.
what happens is that the grease inside of the lever gets gummed up and
the paws stick so you need to a solvent to loosen them up and relube.
