I have size 13 (48) feet and I'm looking for a set
of road pedals. I've been told the road SPD by
Shimano and Ritchey, or the Speedplay pedals, may
have too small a contact area for me to be
comfortable--hot spots etc.

1) has anyone found this to be the case?

2) if so, what would you recommend? Time? Look? Or
something else?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are looking for a large contact area pedal, I recommend the Look
PP256. Effortless entry, easy yet deliberate exit, and stable
platform. Don't have any experience with SPD type road pedals.

I too wear size 48 cycling shoes. I currently am using Look type pedals
on road bikes and SPD type on mountain bikes. I haven't experienced any
problems with either. I suggest that it may be more improtant to get a
very stiff-soled shoe.

I wear size 48 and I have had problems clearing the crank arm with LOOK
pedals. I switched to the shimano spd road pedal because I can fine tune
cleat adjustment better than LOOK. I also agree, get a stiff sole.

I wear a size 46 shoe and have found look pedals to be the best platform
when used with a
stiff shoe ( I like Sidi). Another good choice is to use the "Arc" Look
cleats which allow for some free float. I have found a source for aluminum
"Look" cleats. Branford Bike has them and they last much longer then the
plastic Look cleats .

I am also using 'Look' with 'SIDI' shoes, works good for me too. The
aluminum cleats sound interesting. How does one contact Branford Bike??
Thanks

I have a pair of (rather) soft soled Shimano SPD shoes, and the sensation
is like my feet are trying to wrap around the outside of the pedal. A
more supportive sole is what I need. There's no clipless pedal made that
is as wide as my foot.

As was said earlier on this post, it is important for those with wide/big
feet to wear a very stiff soled shoe. I believe that if this is done any
pedal will work fine, regardless of foot width/size. For example, I have a
big and wide foot and I use shimano dura ace pedals and these are
relatively small compared to LOOK, but I have had no problems.

No problems with DA SPD's and size 48 Sidi G2's. Stiff soles do it.
