Does anybody have a workable substitute for the Suntour Roller Cam
brakes that came on the early Cannondale mountain bikes (24-inch rear
wheel)?

One local shop suggested using Magura hydraulic brakes with the
mounts turned upside down. Does anyone have any experience with that
type of setup?

Alternatively, are there any roller cam brakes currently on the
market?

Thanks for your help.

"U" brakes use the same braze-ons as roller cams. There was a fad for
these in 1987, it was considered cool to mount them beneath the chain
stays. Shimano and Dia Compe both made them. I believe Dia Compe still
makes them for BMX bikes.

McMahon beat Shimano to it- rather, it's an upside down "M" brake.
Which, incidentally, fit U-brake bosses.

Actually McMahon didn't beat anybody to it. The ORIGINAL Power-Link brakes
date back to around the 1950s. MRC just machines them out of aluminum
billet instead of the original's use of steel.

Simple. U-Brake's fit the same pivots, also WTB STILL make Roller-Cam
brakes (they hold the patent, they just licensed the rights to it to
Suntour) and Odyssey has a license to produce the design as well,
mostly for BMX/Trials riders though.

I thought that was how the Dura-Ace AX worked too, and that came out
before the WTB. But I only briefly saw it once on someone else's bike.

So, how many really originals are there really? I say we won't be needing
a patent office pretty soon :)

Try the most excellent Wilderness Trail Bikes Rollercam and Togglecam brakes -
from the guys who invented them... They are still very much available.

FWIW, I believe the rollercam bosses are 9mm, whereas canti bosses are 6mm (I
could be wrong on this, though...), so canti's might not work. Of course, I could
be thinking of U brakes, too, which could just make me entirely confused and make
this whole thing irrelevant.
