Hey Koolkat
Yer gonna need to use the proper cleats. Road and MTB cleats are completely
different. You may even have to buy new shoes.
People screaming names.
I'm trying to sleep, you losers, shut up already!
Wait, thats my name...Darkness.
Whoa, huge headache...light...people
staring at me from the top of a cliff.
HEY, why am I sleeping in the dirt??
The PD-A525 road SPD pedals use exactly the same cleats as the MTB SPD
pedals (if you're using '535' pedals they're MTB ones, no?)
The Ultegra and Dura-Ace SPD's use a different cleat system, although you
can use the MTB type cleats in them at a pinch. However, the Ultegra pedals
come with two pairs of cleats. One are 'fixed' position, the others allow 10
degrees of lateral float when clipped in. Swapping the cleats is simple.
*However*, if you're thinking of the new Ultegra SPD-R pedals, they use a
totally different cleat system, and unless your shoes are SPD-R compatible,
the odds are they won't fit.

19) What cleats work with which pedals?
A) The SM-SH70 and SM-SH71 work best with both the PD-7410, the
PD-6500. The SM-SH51 and SM-SH55 work with the PD-M747, M535, M636,
M323, A525, M737 and M525. There are a couple of
usable combinations which can be substituted for the recommended
cleat, PD-M747, M535, M636 can use all cleats (70,71,51,55). The
PD-A525 and PD-M323 work with all cleats except SM-SH70. The new
SH-80, SH-81 and SH-82 are only compatible with the new DURA-ACE
PD-7700.

With respect Joe, that is exactly what I said. The road SPD's do use a
different cleat system (SH70 and 71 vs SH51 and 55). I also mentioned that
the MTB SPD cleats will work with the Ultegra road SPD's.
However, as the Ultegra SPD's come with a pair of SH70 and a pair of SH71's,
the original poster would have no need to carry on using the MTB cleats...
My post was complete and correct.
I believe that you can use the cleats, but with some exceptions.
http://www.shimano.com has a compatibility chart of their cleats and pedals.
Check out http://www.shimano.com/cycling1998/java/services/faq.htm#19.
My question for you is, why bother upgrading? The 535 pedals are high
quality and work well. The Ultegra pedals are probably a bit lighter (since
they are single sided design) but its probably not a cheap upgrade either
since new 535s are going for something like $60. The weight savings is only
62g (410g for 535s, 348g for Ultegra), or about 2 ounces.

Misread your post, I parsed it as the statment that Ultegra and
DuraAce SPD use different SPDs cleats, and not as Ultegra and DuraAce
use different SPDs cleats from the MTB pedals (747, 535, etc ...).
Sorry

Ok, my LBS sold me Exus cleats that when I now look at the package
says, only for use on VP-101.
Anyone know what these are compatible with?
I use them on the spinning bikes in the gym (Look on the road
bikes). The gym bikes have what look like Shimano 323's (MTB cage one
side, with clip and straps) SPD on the other.
I can only clip my left foot into one out of 10 bikes. And then
I can easily slip out.
