My Shimano trigger shifters are located where I can reach them with my
thumbs without letting go of the grips. As a result, I am actually
shifting more, and that has made me a safer rider.

Now, when I come to a highway crossing, I down-shift to where it'll be
easy to start, and then I slow down to where I can check traffic more
carefully, and, more often, I stop. Whereas, with the bar end
shifters, I often used to take a quick look and try to get through
without stopping, or without even slowing down. And the bar end
shifters were so much better than the old down tube shifters on my old
two wheel bike.

Yup makes a huge difference having stuff to hand and easy to use, I’ve used
and owned a bike with down tube shifters and yes they work fine, I liked
the front to be friction, but it’s nowhere as easy/quick as the shifters on
modern road bikes, I can reliably shift at speed move from big to small
ring, if surprised by a steep ramp, as can be the case following trails you
don’t know.

Doesn’t need to be high end either Tiagra/Deore is perfectly snappy.
