Since group rides really turn into races, I generally don't ride in groups of more than 4 or so. But even then it is frustrating. I will be on the back the the front guys will be riding 14 mph. Sooner or later I will end up on the front and riding 12 1/2 mph everyone is falling WAY back. So I slow down and get on the back again and again they are doing 14 mph.
Returning from my ride yesterday I was really getting tired because of my back and having to support it while on the bars. A couple of guys I rode with came by and invited me to go back with them to the coffee shop. That was out of the question but these guys are an example of use-ta-be good riders. One of them is now very uncomfortable in any traffic at all so he only want to ride on bike trails. The other use to ride hard all of the time. When he wasn't riding with the fast guys in out group, he was riding with the fast guys in the Oakland group. So he blew up his heart and now has a pacemaker and doctors orders to only ride slowly. He is quite a bit younger than I am, I would guess around his late 50's or very early 60's so his riding so hard for so long has greatly shortened his life.
As slow as I am, I was surprised to see my Garmin announce that I was putting out some 200 watts. I suppose that is a wild guess like calories burned, but over a long enough time to average out wind effects.
I won't get the parts to repair the 12 speed levers until October and then I will install 12 speeds on the Land Shark. That is one of my heavier bikes or perhaps the heaviest now that I think about it. Properly installed the 12 speed is more reliable shifting though you have to keep it in adjustment all of the time as well.
