What is the effect of having tires this far past mfr recommendations?
The wheels are intended as my set for riding on road, though I may
take an occasional detour through hardpack/fire road.

I ride with Panaracer FireXCpro (2,1) tires on my x222愀 - it愀 no problem,
at least I haven愒 experienced any. Before that I had IRC Mythos XC (1,95)
tires and I honestly can愒 se any difference concerning the rim - but the
FireXCpro愀 are way better and shed the mud really fast :-)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The difference there is minimal. I've
run the fattest Bontrager Jones rear tire on 21-22mm Mavic and Bontrager
rims. The most trouble I had with larger diameter tire and narrow rims is
that the arms on the original Avid V-brakes would touch the outer tire knobs
when I used Kool-Stop pads on them. The original pads and Shimano pads were
OK (they're much thicker). That's another reason I switched to XT v-brakes
which, by the way, I really like. I had more trouble with noise on the
Avids than I do with the XTs. They're the infamous '98 models to boot!
I did have trouble with a really fat WTB Tyrannoraptor that had part of a
bead come off a rim after a little wipeout. I don't know if it was the
crash that caused the tire to roll off or the tire rolling off caused the
crash but the bead on that tire was much looser than other tires I've used.

I haven't used my FireXC 2.1s for a while, but if memory serves they're really
only 1.9" or so at the widest point, so they shouldn't exceed the rim's specs.
Not sure why tire manufacturers to this, but their claimed widths are often
way off. I had some light Nokian 2.1s that only measured 1.7 across.
The odd thing is that many tires come with both inch & metric measurements,
and the metric measurements are generally smaller, and closer to reality.
