On several mid-80's Colnagos I've seen, the tubing sticker on the
frame indicates the frame is built out of Columbus "Gilco" tubing.
I haven't seen Gilco on any other frames. Does anyone have knowledge --
general or specific -- about this tubeset?

"Gilco" is a Colnago specific tubing.

"Gilco" stands for Gilberto Colombo, an engineer from Mandello (Lake Como).
If I recall correctly, the "Gilco" shape, which is still used in many
Colnago frames, was designed (and patented) to allow extrusion of tubes at
lower temperatures or lower pressures with existing presses.
Gilberto Colombo was a brilliant engineer; he contributed, among others, in
the design of some of the "wings" (?) in a Ferrari F1 car and he came up
with a new keel and hull shape in the (sailing) Olympic Star class which is
still the fastest today.
Colnago uses the same shape on carbon tubes (C40) even though there probably
is no advantage in this type of construction. As far as I know only Colnago
can use this shape (at least until the patent expires).
