120mm spaced internal gear hub? (more than 3sp)

I want to run a 8sp internal geared hub, preferably the Alfine or
Nexus Red Band, but it looks like I'm going to have trouble getting
the frame I want in 135mm spacing (despite what pricepoint says they
carry). I've made all my plans based on 135 spacing, but I may need
to reconsider if I can't get the right frame. Anyway - has anyone
run an internal geared hub that narrow? I'll be running a rim brake,
so no drum needed if that helps.

Sturmey Archer make the XRF5 in a 113.7mm version (add spacers to taste) and
the XRF8 in 116.0mm.

The SRAM 5-speed hub is narrow-- varying from 122mm to 126mm based on
what kind of brake it has. I used a Sachs Pentasport coaster brake 5-
speed on my GF's (now wife's) bike, which came originally equipped
with a 110mm coaster brake hub. The hub has been great-- smooth,
quiet, rugged and reliable. The original shifter and clickbox were
utter junk, though. My sweetie could hardly ever get the thing to
shift into low gear until we replaced the shifter/clickbox with a
nicer quality unit. Maybe the latest models come with the upgraded
shifter, or maybe not. Either way, it is something to be aware of
should problems arise later.

The no-brake SRAM P5 hub runs 123mm wide, so it should fit into a
120mm frame without modification of either part. It has the same
overall range as the Shimano Nexus 7 hub, but with slightly larger
jumps between gears.

Right. My Raleigh International is spaced at 120, but I had no
problem fitting a brakeless Nexus 8 into it. It's a delightful bike,
I really enjoyed riding it with that hub.

The Sturmey-Archer 8-speed is a good choice for small-wheel bikes,
like my Raleigh Twenty:

However, I wouldn't recommend it for a bike with full-sized wheels,
due to its peculiar gearing.

Also, the Nexus 8 shifts quite a lot better. Actually, the Nexus 8 is
the best-shifting bicycle gear system I have ever experienced.

Is there a break-in period? My red-band nexus shifts in a decidedly
uncertain way, feeling at times as if it overshifted and then dropped
back in gearing. I'm careful to ease off during shifts, but still the
impression which results is that a strong rider, standing on the pedals,
could do some damange without trying. The dealer adjusted it, but didn't
really seem to think the problem would go away.

The bike has very few miles on it, probably between 500 and 1k. If the
shifting improves I'll be very happy.

I do agree it's an excellent shifting scheme, mostly because it allows
standing downshifts. If somebody could devise a deraillur that shifted
at standstill (which I can't imagine!) the Nexus would have real
competition.

I've got the Pompino setup for SS cross. Surly hubs (for now), with a
carbon straight Redline Fork. I'll upgrade to the 8sp hub later.

Regarding the Nexus 8 spacing, you've said "without brake and with a thin locknut a Nexus 8 is 123mm." Could you tell me which model number of Nexus 8 you're referring to? Do I have to buy one of the models with a roller or coaster brake, then remove the brake mechanism to get the extra clearance? If I can, I want to use the V-brake model, which is only offered in 132mm or 135mm, according to the Shimano website.
