indexing a Sachs 7-speed freewheel

Does anyone know what combination of shifters and derailleur will
properly index a Sachs 7-speed freewheel? I have tried both Suntour and
Shimano rigs, using not-all-that-used components, but the spacing isn't
right.

Some time ago, the all-Suntour systems indexed perfectly -- for me at
least -- but I have run out of sources for Suntour 7-speed FWs. The
only quality FW I have been able to procure is a Sachs. What's the
indexing scheme on a Sachs?

Thanks if you can help. DJD, NYC

Dave:

The Sachs 7-speed freewheel will index just fine with a Campy rear
derailleur (anything from about 1993 onward) and any Campy 8-speed
control device (DT shifters, Ergo, etc.). You could also use a
Suntour Superbe Pro rear derailleur. There are probably others that
will work, but I have tried these combinations.

My sachs 7-sp freewheel indexes with my campy chorus/athena ergo (chorus
levers (yes 8 speed), athena RD). Also, if you haven't already, you might
want to advertise that you are looking to buy suntour freewheels in
rec.bicycles.marketplace, given their scarcity via mailorder and other
sources. My "other" road bike is Superbe equipped and I bought a
freewheel through rec.bicycles and also a couple by asking fellow riders
around town who have switched to eight or nine speed set-ups.

Good luck.

this is not exactly true. Sachs makes two different spacings in their
freewheels, namely spacing for Shimano indexed systems and Campy indexed
systems. Shimano compatible freewheels have black spacers, Campy has brown
spacers. A Shimano/Sachs freewheel will not index properly on 8spd Campy and
vice-versa. This will be most noticeable on the upper and lower cogs. I
should qualify what I mean by "not work properly" - yes, any freewheel will
work, it's a matter of whether you want it to shift cleanly or not. On 7spd
indexing I've been able to use Shimano compatible freewheels without
problem.

You need either Sachs own derailleurs and levers or Campagnolo.

the _7_ speed spacing between campy, shimano, and sachs is the same, so
shimano 7 speed shifters and derailleur "should" work.

There's no `should' about it. They do.
My current setup consists of a Sachs Aris 7-speed freewheel, RSX rear mech
and Ultegra bar-ends and the whole thing indexes perfectly. Hell, the Aris
freewheels are so Shimano compatible that you can use the Shimano freewheel
tool to remove 'em.
