I would like to try a wider tire than a 700 X 25c for early spring
riding,(i.e.potholes and sand). Has any one used the Vittoria
Mastercross 700 X 27c or equivalent without any problems? Please
advise.

It should be fine. I run 622-32mm tires on Mavic MA-2 rims (which I believe
are of similar width) with no problems.

If you consider that MTBs run 2" wide tires on rims the same width as an
MA-2 or not much wider you'll realize that rim width isn't an issue for most
road (under 35mm) sized tires.

I have run 700x35c Continental Country Grip tires on Reflex rims, worked
fine.

Not a problem. I have run Avocet Cross 700/32's on my Reflex's for about
2500 commuting miles with no problems. The Avocets are actually about
29-30mm in width ( I measured), not the 32 as advertised, and this is also
something to keep in mind that tire manufacturers often mis-state the actual
width(s).

I too agree with Alex Wetmore's comment about mt. bike tires on the modern
style mt. rims, which is usually a 50mm plus tire at 35 psi on a 22mm wide
rim, as opposed to a road rim at 19mm width running a 32-35 tire at a
pressure that actually helps keep the bead better seated.

Sheldon has a good article concerning tire width/rim compatability, and he
has stated that he thinks that the findings were a bit conservative. But
the article does bring up some good points about what happens when the tire
is huge and the rim very small.

I use Panaracer 700x32 on Mavic Open CD4, which is an older version of the
same rim (almost exactly the same width as the Reflex). About 4000km on the
wheels so far with no problems at all. I also tried a Avocet 700x35, and it
worked fine as well.

One point that people tend to miss in the wider tire thing is the
effect of the rim on tire width. The same tire will have a wider
footprint on a wider rim. Now you can gain a lot of width by letting
air out but that is inefficient for riding.

I have never heard any debate on where the trade-off between a wider
rim and a low tire pressure would take you. My vote is wider rim, more
air, pedal faster.
