If you consider that MTBs run 2" wide tires on rims the same width as an
MA-2 or not much wider you'll realize that rim width isn't an issue for most
road (under 35mm) sized tires.

I too agree with Alex Wetmore's comment about mt. bike tires on the modern
style mt. rims, which is usually a 50mm plus tire at 35 psi on a 22mm wide
rim, as opposed to a road rim at 19mm width running a 32-35 tire at a
pressure that actually helps keep the bead better seated.
Sheldon has a good article concerning tire width/rim compatability, and he
has stated that he thinks that the findings were a bit conservative. But
the article does bring up some good points about what happens when the tire
is huge and the rim very small.

I have never heard any debate on where the trade-off between a wider
rim and a low tire pressure would take you. My vote is wider rim, more
air, pedal faster.
