I've heard that this particular derailleur has a slightly different lever
arm and is only compatible with same year Dura-Ace 8 speed STI shifters.
Does anyone know if that's true?
Thanks for any help,
paul

8 speed DA derrailleurs are compatible with 6, 7 and 8 speed DuraAce shifters.
There are no compatibility issues with the cassettes.
8 speed DA rear derrailleurs can be used with 9 speed Shimano shifters and 8
speed cassettes.

So, to clarify (for myself), does the derailleur have some weird spacing so
that it's ONLY compatible with Dura-Ace shifters for 6,7,8 speeds? Does that
mean that both the Dura-Ace shifters and the deraillleurs have a different
spacing that adds up to a standard spacing on the cassette?
For 8 speeds, can I use ANY 9 speed Shimano STI shifter (105 or Ultegra)
with an 8 speed cassette?
Would this derailleur be compatible with a 9 speed cassette?
Thanks for your help,
paul
PS This excercise must be so frustrating for LBS's who have to figure out
all these strange compatibilities
Someone should invent an STI shifter that can be adjusted for throw, so that
it's compatible with all indexed systems (SRAM, Shim., Campy, Suntour etc).

It has a different geometry than all other rear derailleurs of
Shimano.

Yes. Actually the 8x DuraAce shifters pull the same cable per shift
as all Shimano 9x (including the 9x DuraAce) shifters do.
> Would this derailleur be compatible with a 9 speed cassette?
No, as it shifts 8x steps with 9x cable pull.

Modolo Morphus, though I haven't seen someone being really satisfied
with it.

Shimano knows, and they'll even tell you. Go the the source:

8spd DA levers (7400) shift an 8spd DA rear derailleur across an 8spd
cassette.
Any 9spd levers shift an 8spd DA rear derailleur across an 8spd
cassette.

Thanks to Helmut for clarifying the different geometry.
whoohoo, now I can start upgrading!

ps Now, I have a Shimano 600 6 speed freewheel, with 600 downtube shifters,
a sachs 8 speed chain and the 8 speed DA derailleur. Indexing works almost
perfectly (interesting, it didn't work at all with the old 6 speed chain).
I'm going to try to find a rear STI brake lever and leave the front changer
on the downtube.

The cable pull of the shifter is slightly less for the 6, 7, and 8 speed
Dura-Ace shifters which means that the derrailleur "throw" is slightly more to
compensate for this.

The pre-nine speed stuff does.

I believe so. I am currently using 9 speed DA shifters with an 8 speed DA rear
derrailleur successfully. But all the 9 speed stuff is compatible.
The cable pull on any 9 speed Shimano shifter is equal to the cable pull of an
8 speed Dura-Ace shifter.
>Would this derailleur be compatible with a 9 speed cassette?
No. Since 8 speed and 9 speed cassettes are the same width, this combination
would shift all 9 cogs with 7 rather than the normal 8 motions. Most of the
center would be all goofed up.

Well, Modolo did with their Morphos which covers 6,7,8,9 Campagnolo and Shimano
but rider reports are varied - some love 'em, some don't.

If used with an 8-speed cassette (any Shimano 8-speed cassettee) it will
work with Dura-Ace 8-speed or any Shimano 9-speed shifters. 9-speed
shifters only work with 8-speed cassettes with your old derailer.

Any shimano 8spd cassette will work. Only 8spd Dura-Ace shifters.

Correct

Almost correct. ANY year 8-speed DuraAce levers. This includes downtube,
bar-end or STI shifters from any year.

Oops, I missed the same year part. Tom is right. Any year 8spd
Dura-Ace shifters will work with any 8spd dura-ace rear derailleur.
