My frame is an 1988 Atala and on the seat tube there is a decal that says
a few things in Italian that I don't understand. It says the following:
Tubi Speciali in Acciaio
Carbonio Manganese
Tretubi Aelle
Columbus
An Italian chef at a local cafe translated that the first two lines meant
that it is a very light metal found only in Italy. He also said that it is
very valuable and I should use "Gorilla locks" to lock it up. (His
Italian I think was better than his English).
Comments are always appreciated.

I believe that means"
Special steel tubes (probably not _that_ special)
Carbon Manganese (alloy)
Three tubes Aelle
Columbus
(Aelle is the least expensive lines of Columbus tubing, this bike would
have Aelle top, down, and seat tubes of Aelle, and no-name forks & stays.)
Details on Columbus tubing are available (in Italian) at:

It seems to be Columbus Aelle steel tubing, made of carbon manganese. This
is Columbus' lowest level of tubing, though still alright. It is just below
their cromoly brand of tubing. Hope this helps.

Tubi Speciali in Acciaio = Special Tubes (does "in Acciaio" mean "in
Steel"?)
Carbonio Manganese = carbon and manganese, the principle alloying elements
Tretubi Aelle = Three Tubes Aelle. The top, down, and seat tubes are
Columbus's Aelle model tubes. These are cheap, heavy, stiff tubes, but
ya gotta love the bike anyway: it's (probably) a (mostly) hand made
Italian frame! The tubes in the stays and fork are not specified.
Columbus = Columbus (of course), the tube maker A. L. Columbo & Sons
Hope this helps,

Sounds like this is made of columbus Aelle tubing in the three main
tubes. the stays and fork are of some lesser tubing.
I believe Aelle tubing is a seamed tubing, just a flat sheet rolled
into a tube and welded together.
It would not be considered a real high end tubing in the columbus line.
SL, TSX, Genius, EL are what I would consider the high end columbus
tubes. I am sure someone will flame me if I am wrong.
