Hi there.

What pedals would be the same vintage as the Shimano 600 Arabesque
groupset? I'd like to get something that would be the same vintage as
my Arabesque groupset I'm using to restore anold frame I have here.

Thanks and cheers

Most MKS pedals are of such designs as were contemporary with 600
Arabesque, and they are available new. Pedals get pretty beat up, and
a lot of historically appropriate ones will be knackered by now.

MKS or KKT road pedals probably.

MKS is still extant and their classic Sylvan series remain
unchanged even down to today.

What about Suntour Cyclone?

My pedals of choice for many years before clipless.

If he wants to continue the Shimano theme, he could go with the Deores
of the period or the slightly later (1984) 600EX pedals.

I would go with some Shimano SPDs and skip the historical reenactment
-- maybe paint on some arabesque designs. Paint them white and call
them Sante.

I most definitely do not want to go with any clipless pedal. I tried
MTB style ones andhad far too much trouble clipping into them. I have
Look 1 st generation, Shimano Exage ( which I removed the mould lines
from and polished to a very high lustre) and a pair of Wellgo clipless
road pedals. I can easily enter any of those pedals but I have fallen
a couple of timestrying to get out quickly when my the cranks were
vertical or nearly so and the upper wouldn't release before I fell
over. I went back to toe-clips andstraps and I love how easily I can
get in and out of them no matter what position the crank is in.

Then you have many options for period appropriate pedals. I built a
bike for my father in the late 70s with Shimano 600 Arabesque and used
MKS pedals. I preferred Campy track pedals at that time, but those
were out of his budget.

Obviously if that's what works for you (and certainly if that's what
you love), then that's what you should have.

About unclipping from SPD, though - (except for panic unclipping) I
always unclip from the pedal at the bottom center w/ cranks vertical,
then turn cranks and unclip the other side at bottom center, too.
Other positions are doable (as in panic unclip), but bottom center
offers steady control and best leverage for me.

Lyotard mod 23 are my all-time favorite. I'd buy more right now if I could.

Why? I liked them 30+ years ago (had them on my commuter and touring
bike), but not compared to modern pedals. They had no seals and were
steel and had third-rate bearings. Now you can get things like the MKS
GR-9 platform pedal -- no cleat ridge and more comfortable if wearing
soft soled shoes.

There are others, too, including this super-groovy mod 23 redux from
White Industries.

Only about 10 times more than the originals -- but hey, they're
aluminum novelties with sealed bearings and SS axle. Made in the
USA! Go USA, go USA (repeat after me) . . . I'd rather ride those
things in the PNW, if I could afford it. Luckily, my modestly priced
Shimano SPDs are perfectly adequate for my needs.

In my opinion you have always time to unclip even in a panic
situation. You can with some practice unclip when you have come to a
complete stop. You only have to balance your bike for a second to get
time to unclip. How much time do you need to backpedal to you favorite
unclip position?

Yes, I've wished the Mod 23s were better sealed. But it hasn't seemed
to make a practical difference. My originals, from the 1970s, keep
working and working and working, so I'm sure the newer ones on other
bikes will last until I die.

Steel absolutely doesn't bother me. They're certainly light enough
despite the ferrous content. But I think Mod 23s are the easiest entry
pedal ever made for toe clips and straps (which I still prefer). I find
them perfectly comfortable in all my shoes, including thin-soled
ordinary sandals. And I like the aesthetics.

White Industries version comes close... but not close enough to shell
out that price.

What I would use if I wanted straps.

It was never the bearings that wore out for me, it was the rivets.

Me too. Never a bearing issue and they are certainly light.
The stamped tops of the sideplates wore through in barely 10
years. I got one more year from a repair but had to finally
retire the last pair.
http://www.yellowjersey.org/photosfromthepast/LY23_RIP.JPG

p.s. Those Toutan straps outlived two pairs of Lyotard
Berthet 23s and are still just fine in a pair of Lyotard 460.

Do I recognize the marks where you peined the rivets?

Yes, but there just isn't much material left after years of
shoe abrasion.
