Hi there.

Well, the paint has fully cured and I'm all ready to reassemble my old
Miele Uno bicycle. I was looking at the parts I took off it and
realized that the rear wheel is a Shimano *SEVEN* speed *FREWHEEL* and
not an 8 speed cassette as I thought.

My Camapy Mirage Ergos shifted this very nicely using a Shimano ACERA
rear derailleur.

I recently acquired SORA 8 Speed brifters and SORA rear derailleur.
Will those shift the Shimano 7 speed freewheel well?

If not, I think I will just use the Ergos and the SORA rear derailleur
until I get some new wheels for it.

BTW, here is the link to the repainted MIELE Uno frame if you want to
see it.

Thanks for the advice.

Cheers from Peter

The spacing (technically "pitch") between sprockets on a cassette is
different for 7 (5mm) and 8 (4.8mm) speed cassettes, this means a
shimano 8 speed shifter pulls a hair less cable per click than a 7
speed shifter. I have physically seen setups where the shifter is more
speeds than the cassette and while it will technically function and
shift, it may be a bit janky in that you might not be able to cleanly
hit every cog on the cassette, one or two might give you a little
chain rub on the higher or lower cog or a tendency to shift by itself
under load or due to lateral movement of the chain on uneven terrain.

Yes, you can shift 7 speed Shimano with an 8 speed
Shimano shifter, if you set it up correctly. The cog to cog
spacings are 5mm and 4.8mm, so if you set it up
on the middle cog you're only ~0.6mm out on the
inner or outer cog.

This is more frequently said to work than using the
combo of 8 speed Campy shifters and a Shimano
rear der, which you may have been pretty lucky
to make work.

Hi there.

I see that Iforgot to mention that my MIRAGE Ergo levers are 9 Speed.
That is why they work so well with the 7 Speed Shimano. Note, I did
use the alternate cable routing to do that.

If I had known at the time I was grting my Mirage and Veloce
components (2001) that 9 Speed Ergos would shift 7 Speed Shimano if I
used a Shimano rear derailleur I never would have bought the Veloce
wheels, bottom bracket and triple crankset to replace my Shimano ones.

I just put the stem, the handlebars and the ERGO levers on the
bicycle. I have another stem and bars I could put the SORA Brifters
on. Seeing as I have *NOT* connected the cables yet should I swap out
the Shimano SORA Brifters for the ERGOS? Will that give me at least as
good shifting as I get with the ERGOS?

Thanks again and cheers from Peter
