It's funny, in researching a wheelset I ruled out ksyriums as not good
enough (too heavy, & strange spokes), but apparently they are good enough to
win the tour de france on. Yeah I know "it's the rider, not the bike", I
just find it interesting that I would look down on the champ's bike as
inferior to my own (which speaks for the hobby aspect of this sport).

I vaguely remember a thread from last year about Lance's Ksyrium's. Seems they were "specials", with lighter than stock rims and
various other lightweight bits. But hey, they "look" normal...

I read something (on Velonews I think) about the fact the spokes had
been machined down. At any rate, he rode what he was paid to ride,
and on that particular stage, any aerodynamic penalty would be pretty
much minimal.

And I doubt he was worried about the longevity.... ;-)

According to the "live" web feeds coming from Velo News, the rims were
lightened by machining away some of the metal between the spokes. Cool trick,
but it obviously would weaken the wheels considerably. Dont try this at home,
Kids. Remember, they only had to last for one stage!

Dude,

Do yourself a favor and stay away from cycling newsgroups if you're trying
to not see results.

Kind of like not running through a meadow in May if you're allergic to bee
stings or something.

Hi Dude,

guess your trying to give me some kind of message, well I'm sure not
that intelligent, don't understand what you are saying, is this some
kind of USA talk, I'm from the UK.
Just wanted to give the group upfront news on Your Lances victory at
the Alps D'huez stage yesterday, and to let you know that again, as
last year he was using Mavic Ksyriums, and not, Rolf Vectors that are
the usual Trek Spec.
Maybe you was not here last year when the group discussed this.
Apologies if you were offended.

Alan,

I think you replied to a person that was supporting you. TZ was
the one bitching at you for posting TDF results.

It's about the money he will receive when using and winning on these wheels.
When Shamals were brand new, Campag offered $50,000 to anybody that won a stage
of the TdF on them....

In some parts of the world we don't get the telecast of the tour until
the day after or even two days after. It can spoil the fun of watching
the stage if the result is already known.

There is a convention that a) one doesn't put the stage results in the
message headers and b) you give some warning ie. SPOILER or RESULTS or
some such in the header of posts that contain results so as not to spoil
the tour experience of others, two small, reasonable and easy bits of
consideration for others.

To see the sense this you just have to get out of your self centric
world view for a second, obviously difficult for some.

Unless, of course you just enjoy spoiling other people's enjoyment in
which case you are, as has already been remarked, an asshole.

Even in the US it is fairly common to record the tour and watch it later.
It is broadcast live on the west coast from 6:30am to 8:30am (or 4:30am to
8:30am during the mountain stages). Many people are either at work or still
asleep during that time. I've been recording them and watching them later.

OLNTV is rebroadcasting in the evening, but this message was sent before the
rebroadcast.

Lose they alloy nipples unless you want to rebuild the wheels every
couple of months. I got to the point where I was replacing an alloy
nipple on every other ride...a real bitch in the rain!

Do yourself another favor: next time you get to urge to call someone an
asshole, take a look in the mirror first. You'll find it an informative and
sobering experience.

I just got back from the TdF. While I was there, I asked some folks
with USPS if they were stock Ksyriums. The ones most are using, yes.
Lance's are stock except they are milled slightly between the spokes,
as are some of the Ksyriums used by riders on other teams. At least,
that is what I was told.

Mavic is not a sponsor of USPS. But they are the wheels the team
wants to ride and are furnished to the team by Mavic.

Surprisingly, on a number of the "hillier than you might think" latter
stages, the USPS team rode Cosmics rather than Ksyriums. The Cosmics
are heavy but better aerodynamically -- what they'd use on a flat
stage.

The team hated the Rolfs and refused to ride them, even if Trek was
the sponsor. It won't be an issue going forward since Trek and Rolf
have separated.

A few teams were using the new Bontrager wheels. It will be
interesting to see if USPS switches to them.
