Hi

Just wanted to do a little straw poll on the subject of paint jobs. I have a
couple of frames in need of a repaint and was wondering what people
generally use for painting bike frames. I know that many frames are painted
at the factory in enamels but the availability of enamels in interesting
colours seems a problem.

I have painted frames in the past, finishes ranging from the laughable (1985
Dawes Galaxy) to the presentable (1989 Orange Clockwork). Hammerite type
paints (in smooth finish) seem to be reasonable but still not quite what I
am after. I am able to get the finishes decent, but the durability seems to
be the big problem.

What do you lot use?

TIA

Hammerite would seem to indicate that you're in the UK. Cycle painting is so
cheap in the UK why do it yourself? Argos in particular offers great paint jobs
at prices that seem to us in the USA unbelievablely cheap.

Generally I use PPG Urethane automotive paint.
You can have just about any color you want mixed.
But you want to know about "cheap" paint jobs.
Most Sherwin Williams paint stores will mix their Alkyd
enamel paints to just about any color. Last qt I bought
was $12

I use grey primer and a brush. The primer dries very quickly, easy to
touch up, and leaves no brush mark.
From 1.4 miles away, it looks just like titanium.
