There have been several questions lately about whether or not you lose your
data when changing the battery on a Shimano Flight Deck computer. Some have
said yes you do, while others have said they didn't. I thought I would
share my experience.

I have an older SC-6500 Flight Deck and I did_NOT_ lose data when I changed
the battery. BUT, I changed the battery as QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. I had the
new battery laying next to the computer and when I unscrewed the battery
compartment door I shook out the old battery and had the new one in under
two seconds. All data, including total odometer mileage, remained intact.

So, I conclude that the computer will hold data in memory for a short time
and that if you switch over batteries quickly enough you will not lose data
on the 6500 Flight Deck.

I have the Flight Deck, so thanks for the info. Now, assuming that I don't
quite have your dexterity, could you please repeat the experiment taking a
little longer each time until you finally lose all of the data. That way
I'll know how much time I really have :-).

Ride on,
Don

I have both the 6500 and 6501. Maybe I'll try an expiriment with the 6501.
On the plus side, if your 6501 does lose its odometer, no worries. Just
remember to jot down or memorise the odometer reading before you replace the
battery. The 6501 allows you to program in a new reading.

Speaking of FlightDecks, has anyone experienced this?:

This was after I descended a really long hill to a stoplight and had been
going at a pretty good clip so I was amused when I decided to check my max
speed. I suspect it was the result of passing over a traffic sensor. I
believe that many traffic sensors are metal detectors and work by emitting
an EM pulse and measuring the induced response. I wonder if the fact that I
have the wireless harness makes my setup more succeptable to traffic
sensors. I've had this happen on more than one occassion.

Erf! This will teach me not to just grab from the location bar of my
browser. You know, this is the second time I've done something like this in
the past day (first time was to BikeForums). Anyways, the correct URL is:

Not on the flight deck.. but many times with a vetta v100 on my
mountain bike. I had to improvise with the magnet, because the bike is
has a "lefty" fork and disc brakes.... no place to get the magnet and
sensor close together... so i got a round magnet from the hardware
store and glued it on the brake rotor. If i put the sensor too close
to the magnet, the speed gets tripled and all the mileage readings,
etc are also increased. Guess the magnet is too strong and causes the
sensor to "bounce" and mulltiply the readings.
