Some lowlife stole my SPD pedals off my road bike. However I DO have an old
set of M424 pedals (with the plastic cage.) Does anyone know if it is
possible to remove/cut off the cage from these pedals and still use them?

Its purely an ego thing ...... I've fitted the pedals but the black plastic
cages just don't look right on the old thoroughbred.

Swap them for a better option via craigslist--that's what it's there
for.

Yes, pop the caps off the plastic cage where you'd usually find the
dust cap on an old fashioned pedal and you'll find an M5 screw holding
the plastic cage to the pedal body. Take that out and you'll be able
to bend the cage enough to slide it off the axle end of the pedal.
Cant remember if you also need to pull the axles out, but that's a
trivial task anyway. You end up with something quite ugly, so it might
be better to just sell them on and spring for a pair of PD-M520s
