Reynolds 453: What is it? On an older English bike a sticker ws on the
seat tube denoting that the frame was made of 453 tubing. I've never
heard of this tubing. I suspect it is a mix of different tubes, but
can't confirm that. Anybody know what it is?
Thanks,
David

They give different numbers to each different aluminum 'mixture'. I can't
tell you what the proportions are, nor what metals are doped with the
aluminum.

Except that Reynolds tubing is steel.

I've referred to several sources (Including "The Custom Bicycle" from 1979)
to find a reference to 453 tubing. Can't find anything (531 is the classic
tubeset, 753 the first high strength Reynolds tubeset). It's possible its a
mix of tubes from several different standard Reynolds sets.

Until recently, all Reynolds tubing was manganese-molybdenum (the founder of
the company thought chrome-moly had less ductility than mang-moly). The
numbers DO refer to the ratio of alloying constiuents, but are not standard
metallurgical nomenclature for steel alloy.

Yeah, I tend to forget they make mostly steel tubing, as I prefer aluminum
over steel, but they do make quite a bit of aluminum tubing also.

I don't believe they make any aluminum tubing. The Reynolds Aluminum
company that you may be thinking of is a US complay unrelated to
Reynold of England.

Reynolds does make aluminium tubing. I'll quote part numbers if you's like.

453..............isn't that what they use to make "ReynoldsWrap" (aluminum foil
for your leftover meatloaf)
