I think I have narrowed down the creaking/clicking sound on my Giant TCR
to the seatpost. However, even when I put lots of grease on the seatpost
(and in the seat tube), I still get the odd click. I noticed that it looks
like Giant is using an internal aluminum sleeve in the seatclamp area to
reinforce the tube (ie. butting the tube). Is it possible that it is this
sleeve that is generating the clicking as opposed to the seatpost? Does anyone
have a possible solution for this?

I had a similar problem with an early Cannondale MTB that used internal sleeves
to simulate 'butted' tubes as well. Upon recommendation, I poured motor oil
into the seat tube, then turned the bike upside down for the oil to drain and
to get into the sleeve. Sounds weird, but it fixed the problem. I'm not sure
if I should do the same to the TCR!

Yes I had the same you need to remove the sleeve clean it & grease it (also
the inside of the frame ) & it should be fine .

Phil hit the nail on the head. Also, make sure the sleeve is put back in the
proper way. There is a mark on the sleeve that says, "this side forward", or
"this side back", I'm not sure which, but just do what it says.

Just how do you get the sleeve out in the first place?

I pulled it out with my fingers/hand. There is nothing holding it in
there...

I'd be very concerned with any "creaking" sound in an aluminum bike. I had a
mysterious "creaking" sound from handle bars several years ago which I could
figure out upon inspection. Then one right, the right side bar simply broke off
at the stem. Needless to say, I tumbled head over heals and walked with a gimp
for several weeks after that. Aluminum fatigues and breaks with little warning
but the "creak" you're describing...

if it is a 2000 tcr with those silly dropouts, check the rear triangle for cracks
around the brake- and chainstay bridge

I have a 2000 TCR-1 and have had similar problems. It is the seatpost. The noises
probably started after you rode your bike in the rain and some sand or road grit
went down your seat tube.

1. Clean inside of seat tube and contact area of seat post.
2. Grease like mad.
3. The seatpost adapter ( to fit oversized aluminum tube ) is slotted. Get one that
isn't. The slotted ones let the junk in.

If I know it's going to be a wet ride I'll "seal" that area by putting grease over
areas that water and dirt can get in around the seatpost. It's messy but it works.
It's been quiet ever since I have started doing this.

This begs the question 'why?'

Why have Giant done this? Couldn't they have just butted the tube?
