Hello. I am working on a Campy Rear Hub with Freehub. I am not sure of
the age but I am sure it was a 9-speed. I see no markings anywhere that
allows me to discern a specific year but it is clearly marked Chorus.
But I have been looking at the Campy spare parts catalogs/diagrams on
the official web site moving forward from the earliest models to the
latest. I can therefore tell that it can be no earlier than 1999 because
the hub has some form of pinch cap on the non-drive side which is
secured with an allen key. And the diagrams make it clear that this was
not introduced prior to 1999. A casual look makes later models seem very
similar. So it could be a later unit as well.

All of my prior experience has been with loose ball, freewheel hubs so I
am in new territory and have some questions. First, are these hubs loose
ball or are there sealed bearings in there? Either way, I guess I need
to know how to service this thing. I got into all this because I
discovered that the 17mm hex fixture on the drive side (shown as part
FH-RE026 in the diagram) was only finger-tight and I concluded that this
could not be an acceptable condition. So I have removed the freehub and
the pinch cap (FC-CH025 in the diagram) and want to be sure I put
everything back together correctly. Also, if there is some service work
I can/should do while this is apart, I'd like to check that out. I am
not sure I want to get inside the freehub itself and I don't know if I
need special tools.

So if you can give any tips or pointers to correct procedures, it will
be a great help.

Thanks

Andrew,

As always, thanks. I found this after I posted in a response you gave to
another's questions. I also found the archived instruction sheet from
the Campy website and that cleared things up substantially. I am set now
and I really like this design.

Nice design, perhaps even "best bicycle cassette hub design
ever" in our opinion. Think of it as an AheadSet mounted
sideways. Same bearing/cup/cone front and rear, all models.
Fingers and allen keys only. Sweet.
