I have been bouncing all over the net to find the international
standards for disc brake mounting. Does anyone know where I can find
them?
Magura and Hayes have their 'interpretation' and drawings, but it's
not quite enough.
I have a set of '99 Manitou X-vert, which have some wierd 22mm tab
mount spacing. The international standard is now 51mm and the new
Manitou standard is their 74mm post mount. Manitou claim that the 22mm
tab mount is an old international standard (IS), but the only company
to support it in any way is Hayes, who have a 22mm tab mount to 74mm
post mount adaptor.
Now this is where it gets tricky, I have Louise FR's (IS mount) to be
put on the bike, and I cannot find an interface adaptor to support it.
This leads me to two possible solutions:
1) Get the Hayes 22mm Tab to 74mm Manitou post mount adaptor, then get
the Magura 74mm Post to International Standard adaptor to bolt to
that. But that's a pretty dodgy way to go, having two adaptors on the
stanchions, and probably dangerous.
2) Get the tech drawings for the current IS systems and this alledged
older IS with 22mm tab mount (this was what Manitou told me it was). I
could then draw up and fabricate a suitable adaptor. BUT WHERE DO I
GET THE DRAWINGS......ahhh, it's driving me crazy. (That and I didn't
take annual leave from drawing automotive components to start drawing
bike components).
Any ideas? Anyone got a friend at Answer/Manitou that could help me
out? Even better, anyone from Answer/Manitou out there? Anyone out
there struck a problem like this? Anyone out there got IS drawing or
know where to find them? Anyone out there know who is governing these
standards? (ISO isn't!!!!)
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Corey Gibson
Standards? In the _bicycle_ business??
You'd think so, wouldn't you?

So, what'd you recommend for mounting a cable-actuated disc brake on
a '99 Manitou SX-R? It's got the 69mm Manitou post mounts, but I
can't find any half decent cable-actuated disc brake (be it Hayes,
Avid or Shimano) that seems to fit. It's either 52mm IS or 74mm post
mount, as far as I can see.

I just confirmed with a Hayes tech that a Hayes cable actuated brake will
bolt to your fork with no adapaters whatsoever as shown on that overly
complex chart, page 32.
The product from Hayes is the 95-15169 "HMX 1.1 XC 74mm" brake.
In their cable-actuated series there is only a choice of six inch or eight
inch ( yours is six) so it shouldn't be as confusing as it first appears.
Both brakes share a 74mm mount exactly as your '99 Manitou SX-R.
It's $59.95 here if you're looking for one.
We get excellent service from Hayes (they are local to us) so I am less
familiar with other products that may or may not fit.
Oh, and I just noticed you're in Norge - Are Hayes brakes available in your
local market??
