Anyone knowif the 6 & 7 speed Shimano SIS downtube shifters can be disassembled non-destructively?

Anyone know where instructions on how to disassemble those non-destructively can be found?

Thanks and cheers

I know how to install and uninstall these on the downtube. What I need is something that shows how o get at the innards without destroying the shifter. I want to fix a friend's shifter if it's possible. I have another set that has the part he needs IF I can get both levers apart to swap the parts.

Cheers

In my experience the (front) friction-only shifter comes apart,
but the indexed shifter is what IBM used to call an FRU (Field
Replaceable Unit).

Seems like I had a six-speed SIS shifter apart once, but it
was all busted inside so I just treated it like an FRU and
replaced with a new 7.

Hey I'll bet that old six is still in a bucket in the garage.
I'll take a look...

The mounting hardware yes.
Inside the clicky cartridge no.

I'm NOT interested in FRICTION SIFTERS. It's 7-SPEED SIS DOWNTUBE SHIFTERS which are quite different internally than SIS MTB shifters.

Thanks Andrew.

That's what I was afraid of. My buddy's shifters are worn on the inside of the shifter that fits against the piece that goes over the shifter boss. There's a large chip out of it. I was hoping to be able to swap that piece with another good one that's on a nother shifter.

I guess he'll have to order a new pair from you.

oneadem GooImage photos lead to the statement ----the little tabs break off then forgetaboutititit-----for a 600EX...but looking thru the images..all the ebay units have little tabs

There's an elegant carved Suntour set in muh box works gud.

not like Shim to screw things up....but kinda like a supercharger.

In my experience, even the front unit (7-speed bar-end ultegra unit in
my case) was FRU.

Over the years I've noticed that many SHimano componnts are not repairable but only replaceable. It's why I moved to 9 speed Mirage/Veloce on my bike. The only real b enefits I see to Shimano where I live is readily available off the shelf in astore stuff and a lower low gear on the cogset. Then again, an older or less strong rider might prefer the 24-38-48 rings Shimano cranksets. There are a number of vintge ones available at the shops around here that deal in used stuff. I also like the old touring/mtb cranksets with those rings because the arms are straighterthan modern ones and couple with a moern catridge BB I can get a very narrow q-factor that greatly removes the chance of me getting pain in my sciatica.

I told my buddy to get new 7 speed dwntube SIS shifters from Andrew at Yellow Jersey.

As an aside, I'm using Shimano downtube 7 speed shifters with a 9
speed cassette and experience no problems whatsoever shifting. It is a
second hand road bike I rebuilt and keep in Bangkok and when I built
it was a choice - use the old down tube shifters or buy new
shifters... so I turned the shifter to "manual" and used it. It took
one ride to get used to how far to move the shifter and I really don't
even think about it any more.
