Hello all,

I've got a 93 Beretta whose doors leak pretty badly when it rains and when
I have my THULE installed. Is there any quick fix to this (gasket
material to use, etc.)?

Thanks,

Hello Spencer, welcome to the club! I have a '91 Honda Civic wagon,
also with gutterless Thule roof rack. It leaks through the top of the
driver and passenger doors when it rains - only with the rack mounted.
I called Thule and they suggested that I move the front towers back a
bit. I did this and it reduced the leak but did not cure it. I don't
want to push the front bar back much further because you need a
certain amount of separation between the front and rear bars for
support ( I carry a sea kayak in a cradle, as well as two bikes on the
rack at times). Thule does have an email address at:
THU...@AOL.COM. Maybe all of us with leaking vehicles should send some
e-mail? Thule has a web page as well now, but no "feedback" forms or
such on the page.
Good Luck

While hardly a champion of Yakima, for whom I have a different set of
misgivings, the above problem is not generally seen with Yakima
gutterless racks. Better design, I guess.

Sorry.. but I've had my yaks for 5 years now on a 1990 Tarus and they leak
like a sieve in the rain or while washing the car :( I'm told the newer
towers and clips help but I am reluctant to part with more money for
something that should have worked right the *first* time.

I did find the Web page, but I think it's run by a dealer for Thule and
not Thule themselves. I also sent an e-mail to the AOL address at the
time of my original post, and no response yet.

Anyone know of a contact number or email for Thule?

Cheers

Consider adding a strip of insulation over the tower feet, much like
is done to seal air-conditioners. It should be compressible so as
not to damage the car, but sufficient to act as a water seal.

I had a '91 Sable which is basically the same as a Taurus. With the
old towers it leaked horribly even after I added insulating strips
everywhere.

My new car, a Toyota Camry with the new Q Towers doesn't leak at all.
