Any suggestions for painters?
I can't say that I've tried it yet, but if you're looking for a simple color
scheme, I've been told that an auto painter is a good place to look. If
you're like me and have friends that do that sort of thing, you could probably
get it done for cost of materials.

(of course, I don't have any data so that is only an opinion.)
The best painter I have found, is Jim Allen of CycleSmiths in San
Marcos, CA. He still paints all of the new frames for Torelli (Masi,
Mondinico,, etc..). Although Cycleart and Fresh Frames does a really
great job, Jim's prices cannot be beat. He gets $250 for a standard
job, and $315 for a super deluxe job with enough clear coat to bury the
decals. His prices include the decalset, and detailing. He has
refinished three Masi Gran Criteriums for me, and some other bikes for
many others on the NG, and his work is as good as the other two, at a
much more reasonable price.
If you are not looking for a super deluxe job, Color Factory does a
quite credible job at a bit over $99, but does not like to do
decals....just the painting. He repainted my Tandem in Imron, and I am
really happy with it.

I would be helpful to know what part of the country you are in. Yes, you can
always ship the frame anywhere, but I find it is always nice to meet, talk
to, and see some of the work of the painter that you choose. There are many
painters out there that will do a great job for you...no one person can be
easily crowned "the best".

You may have already checked, but a number of painters have their homepages.
They can be traced from resouces like http://www.sheldonbrown.com
Needless to say, they have pretty pictures.
Velonews contains quite a few ads on painters. You may find one close to where
you live.
Good luck

I just had my frame repainted by a guy at The Color Factory. Very inexpensive,
but did a great job. Call 1-800-62-GLEAM. (I have no affiliation to him).
His basic paint job is $115, plus shipping from New Jersey, with pretty much
any color you can dream up. Add for options like clearcoating, etc.... All
told, it cost me about $150. Very quick turnaround (even with cross-country
shipping). He can help you get decals (ask about Screen Specialties) but
doesn't provide them himself.
The paint is very smooth, no drips or "orange peel". He masked the chrome and
made sure not to plug up the frame drain holes in the seat and chain stays -
important if you ride in the rain much. If you want more than one or two
colors, or if you want fancy paint effects, he may not be the guy.
If you are after the "Velo Immaculata" look, the best guy in the country is a
guy named JB (look for his ad in Velo News). I have seen his work....WOW.
Beautiful workmanship. More clearcoat and hand sanding than you can imagine.
I'd be afraid to ride it. About $250 on up. All the way up.
For "historical accuracy" try CyclArt in California. They match paint to
factory options and have a great variety of decals from various time periods.
Probably best for that old Frejus or other obscure euro-pro bikes.
Also, try asking shops in your area for local frame builders / painters. Now
would be the time to get those extra water bottle bosses you always wanted. I
was trying for a local guy but couldn't beat the Color Factory's prices and
turnaround (even after shipping).
Oh, and you will get different opinions about spray vs. powder coat. Powder
coat is usually somewhat cheaper, but it doesn't look as nice, you can't mask
chrome, and doesn't hold its luster as well. I've heard its more durable
though. Imagine the paint on a department store bike. Probably great for a
rock-bottom price on a winter beater bike, but spend the extra $15 or $20...
Hope it helps.
