Has anybody had any experience with or can recommend a decent helmet
cam? Or ones to stay away from? I looking for something that can
record at least an hour or more continously. I'm assuming that will
mean the camera and the rest of the unit will be seperate which is ok
with me.

I've used the previous generation of this one from Oregon Scientific:
http://tinyurl.com/n7oj5v
It's a self-contained unit (power, optics, and recording together) and mine
records an hour of 640x480 30 fps on a 1 Gig SD card. The newer ones must be
more capable. They're small and light enough that you can carry two at once,
one forward and one rearward, e.g.:

Good London vid. Although, even though I'm a cyclist, I agree with those
words utter by the cab driver at the end. There's only so much counter-
culture disrespect I can or will respect. If I had been one of the near
miss pedestrians there would be a cyclist somewhere with a permanent
reminder of me: broken nose, eyes gouged out, that sort of thing.

Of course these guys are assholes, that's what makes it a great vid.

I've watched bicycle messengers and most of them are far better riders than
the car drivers cursing them. While they occasionally make a dopey move to
save pedaling, usually they're a lot safer than the taxi drivers in San
Francisco.

I'm really not sure about this kind of defence: when it comes to the road
it doesn't matter how safe you are as an individual, unfortunately it
relies on everyone sharing a certain standard. Besides which, cyclists
often proclaim to be ultra safe and have good riding skills but often
this is just an excuse to do what they will. I do it, and because the
risk of persecution is minimal, even if the risk of being caught or just
seen is great, i'll doubtless continue where I feel I can get some
advantage. But some guys really are just <quote>"WANKERS!"</quote>

BTW, it has been my experience that one should call it a "cranial
camera" here... we try not to use the term "helmet" because it's like
bringing up a Jane Fonda flick to Vietnam Veterans... everyone will
start screaming and frothing at the mouth.

This may sound silly but here goes.
All digital cameras have a thread hole on the bottom for mounting to a
tripod. Why not drill a hole in the top of your helmet and secure your
real camera to the top of the helmet? You would get video and sound with
good quality.

What's wrong with this picture? Bob Roll rides around Colorado on his motor
bike without a helmet, then he says "does anybody ride without a helmet at
this point? i feel the same way about my Road I.D. Don't leave home
without it!" Source: http://twitter.com/bobkeroll

A lot of the comments seem to be gibberish, but I can tell you that
riding a motorcycle at 130 with no helmet is fun, dangerous, and it
takes forever to comb the rats nest out of long hair. From my 1970's
incarnation.
Now for the helmet cam.
I have a snow skier's helmet and drilled a hole in the top to mount my
Kodak C813 camera as if on a tripod. It looks silly as shit but takes
good video with sound for about 30 minutes on one pair of rechargeable
AA batteries (NiMH). Not very aero but the helmet can pass for a
motorcycle helmet as well, but kind of hot on a 100 degree day.
The movies come out in 640 by 480, which is better than an NTSC color
television so I can make a DVD with commentary. I haven't saved any of
these yet, but the thing works even if I look like a mad scientist/goof.

Or, VholdR ContourHD! $300, records HD video (1280x720, 135 degree
POV) or SD video (848x480 60FPS! 90 degree POV) onto an SDHC card.
Proprietary Li-ion battery, boo. USB 2.0.

I has the lust. But not the lucre.

I have both models of the vholdr; the original has avi format is very
finicky sometimes it saves sometimes you have nothing on your card;
the HD works better h264 quicktimes movie format and you can use a
16gb micro sd card- it comes with a fisheye lens that in my case could
be sharper. the battery is the same as a generic nokia cellphone
battery- cheap off ebay, but not as reliable as a AA battery.the
vholdr is not waterproof either. the vio is probabally the best, but I
don't like the cables and such- I want a set it up and forget it
camcorder.

Compelling, especially for the price. Little or no artifacting on
extreme motion in the Sea Otter DH video.

I'd like to see head-to-head comparisons against the other major
options: Oregon Scientific ATC3K, and maybe the Canon TX-1 and some of
the Sanyo Xactis. The latter two are not quite as compact, but they have
pretty fancy lenses.
