I see the tabs, the pad is apparently magnetic; and I can center
the pad in the slot with needle-nose pliers on the tab, but the slot
is too small to pull the tab out, it seems.
Am I missing something that has to be loosened or something?
The slot isn't going to get bigger, but maybe it's interference
from the opposite pad that's the problem?
I thought I'd ask before applying serious force.
Pad is round and about the diameter of a quarter.
New bike, so the pads aren't worn.
I was going to transplant them to an older version of the bike.

Weird problem to have on mechanical discs...Do the pads move when you
pull the lever?
Make sure the pads are pushed as deep into the caliper as they'll go,
this might give you a little more clearance. Stick a flat tool in
between the pads and twist it to push the pads.
Remove the wheel (and disc) first.

I can lift the pads out of their magnetic attachment and center them
in the slot, using the tab and needle nose pliers; but they don't come
out of the slot.
Is there a particular direction they need to go?
Maybe push instead of pull or something?
Or maybe new un-worn ones only go in but don't come out?

Slack the cable and, as another person suggested already,
spread the pads apart with a firm push using something broad
and flat.
