What are the lightest 700c clincher rims available on the market?
Preferably 28 hole. These are for a light rider (135lbs).

I'm envisioning radially laced front, radial/2x rear with Ti spokes
and Specailized Team Turbo tires (these have a claimed mass of 165g
[700x20], the lightest I have seen. Anyone know of a lighter tire?)

Regarding hubs, I'm going to be a little less picky to save some
money, since the goal with this wheelset is to reduce rotating mass.

Any comments appreciated...

Thanks,

// Greg Chabra

The IRC Paperlite 700x20 tires are advertised at 155g. I have measured
4 samples at 150g, 155g, 157g, and 165g.

And, adding to the tire weights:

Continental Grand Prix folding 700x23 - 230 grams
Michelin Supercomp HD 700x23 - 240 grams

for tubulars

Vittoria Extreme Kevlar Ultra PR 700C - 285 grams (claimed to be 250g)
Vittoria Prof. All Weather 700C - 292 grams (claimed to be 250g)

All of the above were weighed on a digital scale in the lab here at
work. Precision to 0.001 grams. I hope to collect some more data as
time goes on....

The lightest clinchers out there are Cane Creek Cronos (formerly Chronometro).
24 spoke front, 28 rear. Straight-pull spokes with nipples at the hub.
Velocity Aeroheat rims. Strong enough for training. Front 680g, rear 1090g.
Yeah, I know the rear is not feathery, but all the mass is at the hub.
Lower rotating mass than a Mavic Helium, and much stiffer due to the
monster oversized drive-side flange. They also have an even lighter
version with Ti spokes.

Their MTB version also gives the Crossmax a run for its money --
lower rotating mass, stiffer, more durable, cheaper. I've been riding
a steel 24-spoke MTB front since last Spring and have yet to true it!

As you can tell, I am totally sold on the Chronometro design.

If anybody wants a great deal on tubular wheels, let me know because
I am liquidating my stable.

Check out the new Mavic Helium wheels. Probably the lightest full wheels out there.

Peter Guyton
P.S. Ti spokes break like crazy

How much do Conti Supersport Ultras weigh? Maybe I should get some new
tires!
